Virtual Breastfeeding & Postpartum Doula Support

Journey Revington Talkovic, RN, CNM, WHNP, IBCLC

Journey is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), a Board Certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (NCC)* and Certified Nurse Midwife (AMCB)**. She is also a Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula (since 2004). Journey has 18 years of teaching experience as a Childbirth and Lactation Educator. She is currently teaching live-virtual classes for Dignity Health and Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and in-person classes at the Circle Family Center in Aptos, CA. Journey is passionate about her commitment to educating and empowering pregnant people, and their loved ones, regarding evidenced-based perinatal care. She also partners with Jennifer More to train Birth Doulas in the most rigorous manner, so that collectively, they can support many more families throughout the world. When not teaching, she delights in spending time with her family in Santa Cruz, California.

Journey recognizes the beauty and vulnerability of the Fourth Trimester; how having the right support Postpartum can provide incredible healing and set a family on their parenting path with joy and confidence. Western medicine (and Western culture) does not always provide optimal support and education for new families, and Journey is determined to change this, one family at a time. She is now able to combine her years of expertise as a Doula, Midwife, and Lactation Educator to care for families with private/semi private Childbirth Education, virtual Postpartum Doula care and Lactation support.

Comfort, Support, Information, and So Much More

Doulas have a profound and positive impact on a woman’s birth experience. A doula offers the laboring mother and her family a thread of continuity from pregnancy through to the arrival of their baby. This continual support has shown to statistically improve birth outcomes, such as a significant decrease in the usage of Pitocin and lowered risk of a cesarean section. Source

If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it. -John H. Kennel, MD

Statistics aside, continual labor support from a trusted doula offers birthing women a necessary advocate for the empowered birth each woman desires to have—whether a “natural” homebirth or a “natural” hospital birth with the use of pain medication. A doula is there to reassure the family of the labor’s progress, to offer suggestions for a change in position or in how to better manage the intense sensations of labor.

Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far, I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body. -Ina May Gaskin, Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth

Dolphins are nature’s doulas, they give birth with other dolphins present, assisting the mama dolphin as others circle the birthing team to keep predators away. Similarly, women benefit greatly from the support of other women, helping them to feel safe and supported as they make the journey into motherhood.

We have a secret in our culture, and it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that women are strong. -Laura Stavoe Harm

Dolphin Doulas have undergone a unique and thorough training, focusing on:

  • The use of movement, gravity and breath to support a laboring woman physically,
  • The use of hypnosis and deep relaxation to encourage a laboring woman to break the fear-tension-pain cycle and instead, focus on the positive sensations occurring in her body.
  • The ever-changing culture of birth, well rounded childbirth education and evidence-based best practices.

Dolphin Doulas have a solid understanding of the changes in a prenatal body through pregnancy, the stages of labor, childbirth, and postpartum and how to support women through each of these individually important aspects. They have been trained to cater their service to their client’s individual needs and desired birth experiences. For more information on nature’s midwives, please see the links below:
